When William “Bill” Kieffer, Sr. Moved his family to Baraboo in 1949, he didn’t know that the company he was about to start would become one of the largest employers in the area. Over the years, Industrial Coils, Inc. grew to employ 400 people in Baraboo and 100 more at a plant in Michigan. Located in the original Ringling Bros. Circus wagon shop on Water Street, the company’s growth required several additions to the facility and the purchase of two additional buildings.
Bill was most proud of the company’s loyal employees and the fact that more than one-half of the chose to stay with Industrial Coils for over 20 years. Bill made sure that the company was always one of the first to offer benefits to his employees, such as health insurance and a profit-sharing plan, and he especially looked forward to the annual employee Christmas party and family picnic. Awards that Bill had received from employees held special places on his office wall.
Bill believed that as the owner of a business, it was his responsibility to be involved in the community and he was always ready to help where needed. Bill realized the importance of education and was honored to serve on the building committee for the University of Wisconsin-Baraboo/Sauk County campus. He raised funds to build St. Chare Hospital, was an early supporter of Circus World Museum and was a leader in establishing the Baraboo Country Club. He served on the Baraboo Water Commission for may years.
Bill was a member of the Elks, Masonic Lodge and Zor Shrine. In 1954, he served as president of the Baraboo Kiwanis Club. He was an elder in the First United Presbyterian Church. And in 1969, he received the Jaycee’s Distinguished Community Service Award.
Bill Kieffer was a successful businessman, loyal employer and community leader. He made lasting contributions that continue to benefit Baraboo and its residents today. Bill Kieffer contributed greatly to the fabric of our community.
